Identifying geological structures through microseismic cluster and burst analyses complementing active seismic interpretation

At the Decatur carbon capture and storage site (IL, USA) CO2 has been injected from 2011–2014 2017 to present near base of Lower Mt. Simon Sandstone saline reservoir, resulting in microseismicity. Microseismicity is mainly located basement distributed distinct spatial clusters. The lack significant impedance contrasts within makes interpretation active-source seismic reflection data challenging, however, recent reprocessing allowed resolve faults above at top basement. These generally do not coincide with location microseismic events their continuation general depth cannot be assumed. This paper shows how microseismicity can complement structural interpretations data. In particular, we analyze clusters bursts (abrupt increases) microseismicity, identify unresolved, smaller-scale weaknesses extract statistical parameters. parameters allow comparisons interpreted faults, fracture sets intercepted by boreholes. During injection site, pressure was kept far below pressure, nevertheless, were induced spread beyond expected extent plume. We argue that local stress transfers related reactivated pre-existing fractures critically stressed Finally, conducted a slip tendency analysis for active seismic, selected cluster, nodal planes focal mechanisms determine if structures are optimally oriented respect regime. Our results suggest orientation close well, slight deviations optimal slip. might indicate either maximum horizontal azimuth average direction used analysis, or this location.
